National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment

Our Website

National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA) website was launched in 2008 and since then we have continue to grow the number of resources available to be the go-to place for learning outcomes assessment information.

In the About Us section (the section you are currently in) you will find information about what NILOA is about and who is involved (researchers, advisory panel, supporting associations and foundations). There are places for you to join in the conversation whether asking us questions or signing up to be part of our email list (to receive the monthly newsletter). As a research group, we give presentations at academic and professional conferences. You can access a few of our recent slide presentations. Finally, each month we mail our newsletter and also archive them on the website.

In the Tool Kit, we provide information on commonly used tools that university and colleges use for assessment. Located here is our Transparency Framework, a tool developed by NILOA to support institutions in sharing evidence of student learning on and off campus. Under tests, you will find a list of most common national tests. In the surveys section, you will find a list of national surveys along with a brief description of the survey. In the portfolios page, you will find research and examples of portfolios. Curriculum mapping is one assessment tool for the program level. Measuring Quality is an online inventory of assessment resources presented in a joint partnership with AIR and ACE.

The NILOA Resources tab directs you to the major research projects of NILOA. Each year NILOA will conduct an annual survey to examine the depth and breadth of student learning outcomes assessment at accredited colleges and universities across the United States. To find out more about this project, take a look at the background of why we do this research, the results (written reports of the findings after analysis of the surveys), updates of what is currently happening with the most recent survey, and if you would like the view the questionnaire, we have pdf documents available. In addition, NILOA has commissioned Occasional Papers and Assessment Briefs to be written on different topics. Occasional Papers examines contemporary issues and aims to inform the academic community of the current state-of-the art of assessing learning outcomes in American higher education while Assessment Briefs provide a short, informative guide on the nature and practical use of assessment evidence that is targeted to a particular audience.

The Assessment Resources part of the website provides information on assessment resources from theory presented in papers to examples from other institutions of higher education. In Occasional Papers, you can find the papers commissioned by NILOA that examine contemporary issues and inform the academic community of the current state-of-the art of assessing learning outcomes in American higher education. In the Papers, Articles, & Presentation, you can find important academic research about learning outcomes assessments.

Colleges & University Sites feature links to college and university Web sites that focus on student learning outcomes assessment.
